Gloves off at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid 0   FC Barcelona 2

It may not have been a classic, but it was nonetheless edge of the seat stuff. Gabi Millito’s  collapse towards the end personified the toughness of the battle. (Dear Carlos-it’s not all beautiful football!)

Some enduring images:

  1. Florentino Perez looking increasingly uncomfortable in his presidential box
  2. Cristiano Ronaldo looking increasingy uncomfortable on the pitch
  3. Messi’s cheeky smile after scoring another goal
  4. Pedro fighting back to win the ball.
  5. Pedro  scoring the second goal. An emerging talent , one of Pep Guardiola’s young boys.

Meanwhile a friend of a friend of mine is designing a T-shirt slogan in anticipation of Barca’s return to the Bernabeu. All ideas welcome. PRIZE FOR THE BEST SUBMISSION: Signed copy by author of Barca: A People’s Passion (Bloomsbury)

  2. Angel says:

My slogan for the return to Bernabeu:

    “There’s no place like home..”

  3. Elena says:

Best image: Barca players jumping at the end of the match.
The cules are beginng to really like Madrid, brings wonderful memories. Madrid is our new holy land.

  4. Rodrigo says:

What else is there to do?
We have beaten back to back once again and this year we can be even more historical. To go to the final @ the Bernabeu and win it, will be ” La Hostia”.
The new generations will have nothing else to celebrate because this is it.

    Força Barça

  5. Carlos Oppe says:

My slogan for Milan reaching the final at the Bernabeu, 2nd mecca of football (Stamford Bridge being the Holy Grail): The Special 1, Barça 0

  6. jimmy burns says:

Thankyou Carlos. As you know comment is free and this is a liberal blog in the true sense of the word-open to participation. I do encourage other Chelsea fans to comment. So far the cules have the more enlightening ideas re.slogan and almost everything else.

  7. Carlos Oppe says:

No problem Jimmy! Given this wonderful free space, I enjoy bringing a bit of common sense to ego inflated Cules. I think Wengers comments today on the Spanish Liga ring very true. The Premier League is far superior and it would be a big mistake for Cesc to join a minor league. The Liga has been and still is a 2 horse race since the 50’s, making it easy for the 2 dominant teams to play “beautiful” football against second rate opposition, leaving them to center on the European Cup. So lets first drink to a remarkable Blue Double that is about to be achieved and let me offer another slogan for the Champions Final: Merengues Saludan Mourinho – ¡Orgullo Blanco Salvado!

  8. jaume says:

the number of English clubs in the semi-finals of this year’s champions league and the success of the English National team in recent years (40) certainly are very strong arguments behind your point Carlos. Moreover, if the Spanish league is a minor one and Real Madrid can not win it… well, does not say much of you team.
Slogan for Madrid: Finally Champions League football beyond the round of last 16 returns to the Bernabeu!
PS: i guess that’s how good Madrid is… one of the best 16 teams in Europe… good return for Mr Perez investment!

  9. Walter Oppe says:

Bad looser Wenger says la Liga is not competitive? First: he’s just trying to prevent the sooner or later lost of Cesc Fabregas. Second, let’s go to the facts rather than the impressions. These are the winners of la Liga and the Premier in the recent past:

    Since 92-93 (First Premier League):
La Liga: Barcelona (7), Real Madrid (6), Valencia (2), Atlético Madrid (1), Deportivo (1).
Premier League: ManU (11), Arsenal (3), Chelsea (2), Blackburn Rovers (1).

    Last 10 years:
La Liga: Real Madrid (4), Barcelona (3), Valencia (2), Deportivo (1).
    Premier: ManU (6), Chelsea (2), Arsenal (2).

    Last 5 years:
    Barcelona (3), Real Madrid (2).
    Premier: ManU (3), Chelsea (2).

Is la Liga REALLY less competitive? BOLLOCKS!!!

I’m too busy today but another day I’ll destroy another myth with some statistical facts, the famous dominance of English teams in Europe…
