Salvador (the capital of Bahia and the fifth-largest city of Brazil) was a town I had read about. I was anxious to discover if the reality matched up. 'Salvador's population is about 1,050,000. It was founded in 1549 and was till 1763 the capital of Brazil. Most of the 135 churches, the fortifications, and some other buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries.'
